Open Call for Multimedia Responses to EKE
Submission Deadline: April 1st, 2025
Payment: USD100.00 and a copy of EKE
Gaudy Boy, the publishing arm of NYC-based literary organization Singapore Unbound, is publishing the wonderful collection of visual poetry EKE by Wahidah Tambee in July 2025. A finalist for the 2023 Gaudy Boy Book Prize, EKE received high praise from the prize judge Divya Victor, who calls it “An inventive and often whimsical dive into traditions of visual and concrete poetry.”
To highlight the collection’s unique qualities, we invite artists who work in the fields of (but not limited to) visual art, animation, sound, textile, photography to submit works in response to EKE.
What is EKE about? In the words of its author Wahidah Tambee: “I took a picture but found it blurry—the subject whizzed by too fast. Did you see it? Did you feel it too? Or am I just imagining it? To eke is to wonder if you feel the same way, think the same way, to hope that you did see what I see. To eke is to invite you in and let your witnessing, your reading, be a mark on meaning making so that each poem reaches a form of understanding that, while still not upstanding, is at least a gentle rippling on a surface never still.”
We are interested in how your work interacts with and opens up these poems for many types of understanding. You may respond to one or more of the poems, but please state in your submission which poem(s) you are responding to. Your work will be featured prominently at the book’s launch events, on Gaudy Boy’s website, and in promotional materials with the appropriate credit. Accepted contributions will be paid USD100.00 and a copy of the book.
